TV Coverage Confirmed for Cardiff Half Marathon

The much-anticipated return of the largest road running race in Wales, the Cardiff University Cardiff Half Marathon will be broadcast on television and streamed online, available to view across Wales, the UK and in countries around the world.

Over 25,000 runners have registered for the 18th edition of Wales’ iconic road race, which will return to the Welsh capital for the first time in 903 days on Sunday 27 March, following a period of delay and uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Runners will be able to re-live the day with a dedicated Welsh language highlights programme on S4C at 20:00 on Monday 28 March, which will also be available to stream online with subtitles via the BBC iPlayer. An English language highlights programme will also be broadcast around the world on various satellite channels in the weeks to follow.

The race has grown into one of Europe’s most popular road races, with a route showcasing some of the city’s best-known locations including Cardiff Castle, the Principality Stadium and the Cardiff Bay Barrage.

Run 4 Wales CEO Matt Newman commented: “It’s been a long wait, but we’re so excited for the return of the Cardiff Half this month. The race has become one of Wales’ most iconic sporting events and its return will be a real celebration”.

“As an organisation that is proud to be Welsh, we work hard to ensure that our events consider and embrace the Welsh language to help create a unique sense of identity, pride and culture. Naturally we are delighted that a Welsh language version of the race highlights will be televised this year. Pob lwc to all of those taking part!”

Sue Butler, S4C Sports Commissioner, said: “Good luck to everyone taking part in the fantastic event that is the Cardiff University Cardiff Half Marathon. “There’ll be full highlights the following evening on S4C where we hope you’ll enjoy re-living the experience with your feet up.”

Endurance adventurer Lowri Morgan and former professional rugby player Rhodri Gomer will present the highlights, which will feature a number of inspiring human-interest stories as well as a trio of competitive elite races across women’s, men’s and wheelchair fields.

The race will be delivered as a ‘Breathable Event’ with a number of COVID safety measures in place to protect the health and safety of participants, staff, volunteers and spectators.

A second edition of the Cardiff Half will take place later this year on its regular slot of the first Sunday in October, with entries opening up later in the month for the event scheduled on Sunday 2 October 2022.

Welsh speakers taking part in the race are encouraged to email marketing@run4wales.org sharing more details about their motivations for taking part, for a chance to be featured in the S4C highlights programme.
