Pencoed Trailblazers Continue Footpath Clearing Success with October Community Event

Following a hugely successful launch in September, the Pencoed Trail Blazers are inviting volunteers to join their second monthly footpath clearing event on Saturday 18 October, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, meeting at the junction of Ystradwaun and Glyn-y-Mel (what3words: tastes.wink.backpack).

At the first event, 17 volunteers came together to clear 410 metres of footpath and collect 55kg of litter, making an immediate and visible difference to the local landscape. The group’s mission is simple: to keep Pencoed’s footpaths clear, safe, and accessible for everyone—especially older residents, families, and those with mobility challenges.

“It was fantastic to join the Pencoed Trailblazers,” said Chris Elmore MP, who attended the September event. “Even in the drizzle, volunteers turned out in force to transform our local paths – a great example of what can be achieved when our community comes together. A big thank you to everyone who gave up part of their Saturday to make such a positive difference for Pencoed and I look forward to working with you in the future.”

The initiative is about more than just clearing brambles and litter—it’s about building community, promoting wellbeing, and encouraging people to reconnect with nature. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome. No specialist equipment is needed—just sturdy footwear, gloves, and enthusiasm. Tools and guidance will be provided.

Stuart Bain, event organiser, said: “We were thrilled to see so many people come together in September to take positive action. There was a real buzz—people chatting, laughing, working side by side. It’s amazing what can happen when we roll up our sleeves and get stuck in. We’re excited to keep the momentum going and welcome even more volunteers in October.”

The benefits of volunteering go beyond the paths themselves:

  • Improved physical and mental wellbeing through outdoor activity.
  • Stronger community connections and a sense of shared purpose.
  • Visible impact—volunteers can see the difference they’ve made.
  • Opportunities to meet new people and enjoy a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.

The Trailblazers are keen to see continued support from local councillors, community groups, and residents who care about the future of Pencoed’s green spaces. The group also extends a warm invitation to members of the local Men’s Shed and other social clubs to join in and enjoy the camaraderie.

Media coverage is welcome, and organisers encourage local representatives and organisations to attend the October event to see the benefits firsthand and show their support for grassroots action.
