Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners, with nine parks and green spaces from across Bridgend County Borough recognised for their high standards.

The full Green Flag Award has been achieved by Bryngarw Country Park, Coychurch Crematorium, Maesteg Welfare Park, the Wilderness Lake in Porthcawl and Glanrhyd Hospital.

Meanwhile, Caerau Market Garden, Badgers Brook Allotment, the Wilderness Allotment Association and the Spirit of Llynfi Woodlands have all received a Green Flag Community Award for their efforts towards maintaining top quality green spaces.

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government.

Independent green space experts volunteered their time in early autumn to judge applicant sites against eight criteria, including biodiversity, cleanliness, environmental management, and community involvement.

Bridgend County Borough Council’s cabinet member for communities Councillor Richard Young said: “Many congratulations to all those in the county borough on their successful achievement of this status, it reflects all the hard work which has taken place.

“It is a delight to see yet again how Bridgend county borough is leading the way for high environmental standards, excellent visitor facilities and commitment to delivering great quality green space.”

In total, 224 parks and green spaces across the country received the prestigious Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award – from country parks and formal gardens to allotments, woodlands and churchyards.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said: “The pandemic has shown just how important high-quality parks and green spaces are to our communities. For many of us, they have been a haven on our doorstep, benefitting our health and well-being.

“The 224 flags flying this year are a testament to the hard work of staff and volunteers who have maintained excellent standards under the most challenging circumstances. I’d like to congratulate and thank them all for their outstanding commitment.”
