AWEN Cultural Trust, the registered charity which manages Bryngarw Country Park in Brynmenyn on behalf of Bridgend County Borough, has announced record visitor numbers during its first full month of reopening, following the easing of some coronavirus lockdown restrictions.
Over 48,000 people visited the award-winning park in August 2020, a significant increase of 68% in visitors from August 2019, despite the outdoor theatre programme and Ranger-led events for families still unable to run during this month.
Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust, said:
“Since March, we have taken a phased and measured approach to welcoming visitors back to Bryngarw Country Park, in line with Welsh Government guidelines around social distancing and the use of public toilets, children’s play areas and outdoor play equipment.
“It is apparent that many more people have discovered their local parks, walks and outdoor spaces and have headed to Bryngarw to enjoy the beautiful Welsh countryside and fresh air, after months of staying at home and travel restrictions. We have also seen an increase in visitors from further afield.
“We would like to thank those who continue to observe the health safety guidelines during their visit, and the many visitors who have supported our new visitor centre cafe, which has been operating a limited takeaway service, since the beginning of August.”
Councillor Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Well-Being and Future Generations, added:
“Bryngarw Country Park is one of Bridgend County Borough’s most beautiful assets, and these figures demonstrate how valuable it is to local people, especially since the easing of lockdown conditions.
“With £500,000 investment for new facilities recently secured through the Welsh Government’s Valleys Regional Park initiative, I am looking forward to seeing how the park will benefit from this to further enhance the overall experience for visitors.
“The council will continue to work closely alongside Awen Cultural Trust to ensure that residents and visitors alike can continue to enjoy the park’s many charms.”
