Council confirms next phase of highway improvements

With fewer vehicles on local roads while the Covid-19 coronavirus lockdown is in place, Bridgend County Borough Council is continuing to minimise inconvenience for drivers by carrying out a programme of highway improvements, repairs and maintenance tasks.

The June work schedule, which includes pot-hole repairs and road resurfacing, is currently being completed at Cefn Glas Lane, which links with Penyfai, and at New Road in Abergarw.

Once this has finished, highway crews will move on to Llangewydd Road in Cefn Cribwr where they will spend up to five days working near the humpback bridge, then the A4063 Sarn by-pass road for around six nights of evening work.

The last part of the month will focus on Danygraig Avenue in Porthcawl where temporary traffic lights and stop-and-go signage will be required for approximately four days of work.

In July, crews will spend around five days working on the B4280 at Pant Hirwaun near the Heol-y-Cyw cattle grid, where further temporary traffic lights will be in place.

From here they will move on to the A4065 roundabout in Brynmenyn to carry out evening work between 7pm and midnight. This will take approximately seven nights and will require temporary traffic lights and a road closure between Davis Avenue and the roundabout.

The final part of the July work schedule will focus on the A473 Coychurch Roundabout, where both phased lane and road closures will be necessary between 7pm and 5am. This work is expected to last for around 10 nights.

Cllr Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “Our previous round of infrastructure improvements during the early phase of the pandemic worked really well and meant that it could all be completed with an absolute minimum of inconvenience.

“This latest phase covers both June and July, and is similarly designed to take advantage of the quieter roads. The maintenance forms part of the council’s ongoing investment in the local road infrastructure, and all workers will be observing strict social distancing rules during the work.”
