As the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic continues, Bridgend County Borough Council is continuing to focus its resources on providing essential services and protecting vulnerable residents. The following information provides a summary of latest developments:
Latest public transport changes
A number of privately-run bus services have been suspended as a result of the ongoing pandemic. Affected services include the 861 Nottage to Porthcawl service, the 81 Bridgend to Pen-y-Fai and Brackla service, the 49 Bridgend to Oaklands Road, Broadlands and Ystrad Fawr service, and the 16 Bridgend to Bettws service. Other services will be running daily using ‘Sunday’ schedules. From Monday 30 March, these will include the X2 Porthcawl to Cardiff, the 74 Bridgend to Nantymoel, the 73 Bridgend to Blaengarw, the 70 Bridgend to Cymmer and the 63 Bridgend to Porthcawl.
Social care workers needed
Care worker are being sought to help support the county borough’s most vulnerable residents. A number of employment opportunities are available, and anyone who has previously worked in social care or who has transferable skills is invited to apply. Bulky waste collections, missed collections and deliveries of new landfill and food waste bags temporarily postponed
While recycling and waste collections are going ahead as normal, bulk waste collections, missed collections and deliveries of new bags for landfill and food waste have been temporarily postponed. Any household currently awaiting a delivery of new landfill waste bags will be able to use black refuse sacks or a similar alternative. To ensure Kier can cope with the impact of the pandemic on staffing levels and continue to provide a county borough-wide service, the two-bag limit currently remains in place.
Latest on local markets
At Bridgend Indoor Market, Woods Butchers and the Deli on the Corner will be open on Thursday 27 March until 2.30pm. They will then close until further notice. At Maesteg Market, Andrew Garner Butchers and Carmarthenshire Dairy Foods are currently open, but are reviewing the situation daily. All other stall holders have closed. To support stallholders and other small and medium-sized enterprises, the council is continuing to provide a rent-free period for the next three months.
Vulnerable residents
Around 4,000 residents are receiving letters from Welsh Government urging them to stay at home for the next 12 weeks. The letter provides advice on areas such as planned GP / hospital appointments, prescriptions, wellbeing, food deliveries, and visiting carers and support workers. Council facilities
Children’s playgrounds, public toilets, Bryngarw Country Park, Maesteg Welfare Park, Griffin Park in Porthcawl and car parks at the Rhiw, Brackla One, Rest Bay and Salt Lake are all closed. Council-run cemeteries are currently open. Coychurch Crematorium is open and mourners have been restricted to a maximum of 10 to reduce the risk of exposure.
