School pupil’s poster to promote anti-littering campaign

A poster designed by a primary school pupil will be at the forefront of a new anti-littering campaign.

Jessica, a pupil at Abercerdin Primary School, created the winning design as part of the Our Valley…Love It, Don’t Trash It’ project.

The design contrasts two scenes – a greener environment with a more polluted world, next to the title ‘Help me breathe’.

The project is a joint collaboration between Bridgend County Borough Council, Keep Wales Tidy and Ogmore Valley Community Council, together with Nature Quest.

Three schools took part in the project which ended in June – Abercerdin, Nantymoel Primary School and Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Calon y Cymoedd.

The Deputy Leader, Cllr Hywel Williams said: “Once again, the Love It, Don’t Trash It! campaign has been a real success with school pupils enjoying the opportunity to learn more about their environment.

“Many congratulations to Jessica whose poster is thought-provoking and effective in getting across a key message to help protect the environment we live in.

“It is great to see the enthusiasm among school pupils and their determination to help keep our communities litter-free.”

The ‘Love It, Don’t Trash It!’ campaign which first began in Porthcawl in 2019 has been moving across the county, with schools in Brackla, Cornelly, Pyle, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr, having recently been involved.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Ogmore Valley campaign saw the local authority work with Nature Quest to provide schools with a digital online toolkit which could be used either in the classroom or via online learning.

The toolkit contained videos and activities centred on the local environment and the issue of litter and plastic waste.

Schools were also given litter picking kits enabling them to carry out a litter pick in the area and record their results.
